BIO:
I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics from Swarthmore College and a master's degree in journalism from UC Berkeley. Feel free to email me at patrick@runkle.info.

From 2000 until 2004, I was the editorial director for ArtistPro, a music-industry trade publisher in the Bay Area. I also was editorial director for ArtistPro's short-lived national magazine, which was distributed to all the members of the GRAMMY organization. (That includes Phil Spector.)

Current activities include my band, Ganymede, my trips to Canada, and various other things I do. (See above for links.) I also have a large collection of oversize video boxes from the early 80s.

The sexual harrassment complaint filed against Fox blowhard Bill O'Reilly is just about the greatest thing ever ... it gets good around page 7.

Can you believe our president just spent 90 minutes trying to justify a domestic agenda that is the most twisted, divisive and simply hostile towards human life that we've seen since Warren Harding? Kerry roasted Bush over things like the minimum wage, gun control, abortion rights, tax breaks for the rich, etc. Bush smirked and told everyone that they need to be better educated. (But I know a bunch of people with master's degrees who can't find jobs, Mr. President.) And the best Bob Schieffer could do is throw Bush lifelines with questions about his wife. In particular, the question challenging Kerry's catholicism was disgusting; why didn't Bush get a question about the Pope condemning the war in Iraq?

One of the greatest overlooked treasures of the eighties, the Joe Dante flick Explorers, was finally released by Paramount this week on a beautifully restored DVD. The film is most notable for featuring very early performances from Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, but I think it should be remembered as a film that perfectly captures a particular slice of growing up in the eighties. I highly recommend it. The DVD also features two deleted scenes and a great surround sound mix that shows off Jerry Goldsmith's fabulous score.

Also, Paramount released D.A.R.Y.L. on DVD on the same day, proving that someone there knows what's up. I would also include The Last Starfighter and, to a lesser extent, Spacecamp and Flight of the Navigator in this genre.

Here's a great piece of campaign literature from the Ohio Democratic Party ... Also, here is a pic I took of Edwards during last Tuesday's post-debate rally.

I'm here in Ohio volunteering for the Kerry campaign ... I just gave their outdoor sign a bit of a boost...

I'm in Ohio volunteering for the Kerry-Edwards campaign over this long weekend ... I was at the VP debate last night--the outdoor projection and rally of it, anyway--and it was an exciting event. How anyone can think Dick Cheney is an acceptable public servant is beyond me ... it was like being forced to spend 90 minutes against your will with a crotchety, racist family friend. Oh, and by the way, Cheney's only "gotcha" moment--in which he derided Kerry and Edwards for their Senate attendance and said he had never met Edwards until the debate--was not only a complete and knowing misrepresentation of the way the Senate works, it was also a bald-faced lie.
