BIO:
I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and now live in Brooklyn, New York. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics from Swarthmore College and a master's degree in journalism from UC Berkeley. Feel free to email me at patrick@runkle.info.

From 2000 until 2004, I was the editorial director for ArtistPro, a music-industry trade publisher in the Bay Area. I also was editorial director for ArtistPro's short-lived national magazine, which was distributed to all the members of the GRAMMY organization. (That includes Phil Spector.)

Current activities include my band, Ganymede, my trips to Canada, and various other things I do. (See above for links.) I also have a large collection of oversize video boxes from the early 80s.

Ralf and Florian are touring the U.S. again this Spring ... Definitely an event not to be missed.

On a fateful day in late 1999, I was visiting New Orleans, where I had taught for a year as part of TFA. I decided to take some of my former students (who called themselves the "GVP," or Garyville Posse) to a music studio in LaPlace, La. to record a rap track.

I laid down a beat on a beatbox and let them do freestyle over it. I took the isolated vocals back to my home studio and put a bassline and some other stuff on it. The result was a track called "Kill that Nigga." Now, some people found it a bit offensive--one astute observer accused me of a "musical hate crime"--but I had no control over the titling or the content of the track. (This is akin to my complete lack of control over my classroom as a Teach for America teacher.) I'm still proud of this song and I'm happy to have given my students the experience. Apparently the kids (who weren't really kids then and definitely aren't kids now) have been known to blast this track as they drive through the Garyville projects. Here's the song:

"Kill that Nigga [2k5 remix]"

I was inspired a few days ago by a wave of nostalgia to unearth the original multi-track for this song and do a bit of a remix/upgrade to the sound. I'm proud to present the results to all the members of the patrickrunkle.com e-community ...
