April 26, 2005 April 08, 2005 April 05, 2005 ![]() On a fateful day in late 1999, I was visiting New Orleans, where I had taught for a year as part of TFA. I decided to take some of my former students (who called themselves the "GVP," or Garyville Posse) to a music studio in LaPlace, La. to record a rap track. I laid down a beat on a beatbox and let them do freestyle over it. I took the isolated vocals back to my home studio and put a bassline and some other stuff on it. Now, some people found it a bit offensive--one astute observer accused me of a "musical hate crime"--but I had no control over the titling or the content of the track. (This is akin to my complete lack of control over my classroom as a Teach for America teacher.) I'm still proud of this song and I'm happy to have given my students the experience. Apparently the kids (who weren't really kids then and definitely aren't kids now) have been known to blast this track as they drive through the Garyville projects. Here's the song: "Kill that Nigga [2k5 remix]" I was inspired a few days ago by a wave of nostalgia to unearth the original multi-track for this song and do a bit of a remix/upgrade to the sound. I'm proud to present the results to all the members of the patrickrunkle.com e-community ... |
