Had a thrilling weekend adventure with my friend John Gorenfeld. Our first stop was the Unification Theological Seminary, a beautiful former Catholic seminary in Barrytown, New York that was bought by Rev. Moon in 1975. UTS has recently been accredited to give out Ph.D. degrees, a fact that should probably make anyone with hiring authority look a little closer at applicants' resumes. Lots of creepy things going on there, many plaques dedicated to "True Father," as well as a multitude of young Korean women attending something called the 21-Day Blessed Wives' Workshop.
Our second stop was the Hill Cumorah pageant in Palmyra, New York. Supposedly where Joseph Smith received the tablets containing the Book of Mormon from the angel Moroni, this is the holiest site in the Mormon religion. There is an ornate visitors center where they show a feature-length film about Joseph Smith called Prophet of the Restoration, and there is a huge gilded statue of the angel Moroni on the hill itself. The pageant is a 70-minute presentation that should be known as a gay kitsch extravaganza, with a cast of hundreds running feverishly through the somewhat unlikely story of a war between peoples in ancient America who have left no traces of their existence.
