On the corner of Houston and Lafayette in lower Manhattan, two poignant reminders of outmoded computer technology ... First, discarded after what probably was a long and very productive life, an Apple Imagewriter. Those of us who went to elementary school in the early to mid 80s will remember this machine; it was the one that you used for Print Shop banners that advertised your school's bake sale or, in my case, said "Dukakis/Bentsen 88".
![]() And next, you look up from the discarded Imagewriter on the street corner and notice a large Sony PSP billboard, the one with the fancy color video screen in the middle. But wait, today the system running this has crashed and given us ... a Windows 2000 Professional login screen! I think I speak for everyone except maybe Paul Thurrott when I say that this is not the kind of thing I want to see when I turn on my portable entertainment device. Sony should be embarrassed that it can't figure out a better way to run its multi-million dollar billboard than Windows 2000.

In my internship at South Brooklyn Legal Services, I've been working on a case against Ameriquest that was profiled on last night's Nightline ... Click here for the video, it's really interesting stuff.

The first time I noticed it, I thought that the "Google Pack" was a terrible idea filled with annoying software. Apparently I wasn't alone.
January 16, 2006 ![]() It has come to my attention that many people have still not witnessed the legendary 1978 Shatner performance of "Rocketman" at a science fiction awards show. Thanks to the magic of the internet, you can now fix this gaping hole in your cultural knowledge. January 06, 2006
Is anyone else tired of looking at crappy ads for The New World while trying to read news stories on nytimes.com? Not that I want to see Terrence Malick's movie anyway, but I feel that I've experienced it enough already by looking at every possible nuance of Colin Farrell's ridiculous outfit, etc. etc...

My band, Ganymede, played a show on New Year's Eve at the Pussycat Lounge in New York. I was able to run all the sound through my own Firewire interface and capture the show live. We've put two of the tracks online for people to download: "City Dweller," which is from our first album, After the Fall, and "One Last Try," which is from our most recent album, Space and Time.
I'm fairly happy with the results of the recording. Our live setup is a fairly complex MIDI impletmentation that allows us to control a bank of softsynths and samples using a keyboard MIDI controller. Also, we have two analog synths with us that we use to play solos, fill-in parts and effect transitions between songs. |
