My band, Ganymede, is prepping an epic show for this Thursday night at the Mean Fiddler near Times Square. I hope that all my New York readers will venture out to see the show, it's centrally located and will be fun!

Through the magic of YouTube, it's Jerry Goldsmith accepting his 1976 Oscar for The Omen. Never really thought I'd see this footage; Jerry seems a bit shellshocked and starts getting teary. Very special for any Goldsmith fan. His reference at the end is to "The Piper Dreams," the charmingly endearing vocal version to the love theme from the film, sung by his wife.
January 14, 2007 ![]() I haven't written much on this blog about Sparks, the venerated wacky L.A. band fronted by brothers Ron and Russell Mael, but I do want to plug their 2006 album Hello Young Lovers. Actually, the album is not all that strong throughout, but it contains an amazing track 1, "Dick Around," which has to be one of the great pop epics of the new millennium. They made a video for the single edit of the song, which is now on MySpace. Sparks has been great for 35 years now, so if you've never heard of them, as many outside of California have not, you have some serious catching up to do. Of course, I'm a big fan of the band's Giorgio Moroder years, but the rest of the Sparks catalog has its fair share of gems also. And what other band has the claim to fame of having written music for both Hal Needham's Rad and Tsui Hark's Knock Off? January 12, 2007
It just came to my attention that Arif Mardin, a legendary music producer I interviewed in 2003 about Norah Jones' debut album, died last year at age 74. He was a really gracious interview subject, very forthcoming about his recording process and the value of having experienced musicians making decisions in the industry. He was a friend of fellow Turk Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records founder, who also tragically died last month after falling and hitting his head at a Rolling Stones concert.
In terms of other musicians I interviewed who I enjoyed, former Monkee and interesting innovator Michael Nesmith has made a few headlines with a new virtual organ he invented. The interview I did with him a couple years ago is now available online thanks to Appleproaudio.com. January 05, 2007
Click here to listen to an MP3 of the Talk Radio X show I appeared on the other day, chatting about Cannon Films. It was a fun time.
